The Election

On the night of October 26, 2016, voters across Saskatchewan went to the polls to elect their local governments. At the time, I was working as a reporter for 106.1 The Goat in Lloydminster, which sits on the border between Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Due to the way the city government is set up, the community follows the Saskatchewan municipal election schedule. At the time, I had never had the chance to cover a municipal election, despite covering one by-election, two provincial elections (on both sides of the border) and the federal race in 2015.

After the municipal race was done, I was left with a fairly large array of images, of which I had published only a few. I wanted to put these together into a photo story on the anniversary of the 2016 race, and show a wider range of the images from that particular moment in Lloydminster's history.

You can see them below.

The first image is of mayoral candidate Jason Whiting, a former member of Lloydminster city council. He was one of three outgoing council members to run in the 2016 election, with the other two looking to re-gain their council seats.

The second is of mayoral candidate Cheryl Ross. Ross was a former education trustee in Lloydminster, and had previously run against outgoing mayor Rob Saunders. The pair had faced off in a by-election made necessary after former mayor Jeff Mulligan resigned.

The last mayoral candidate of the three was Gerald Aalbers. Aalbers came into the race after taking issue with the way the city government handled the disclosure of a contract signed it signed with former mayor Jeff Mulligan. Prior to the municipal election, he had worked as an organizer for the Lloydminster Heavy Oil Show.

Shane Schneider, the co-founder of 100 Men Lloydminster, spoke at Whiting's event in September. Whiting announced his mayoral run at the local college, and Schneider spoke prior to Whiting taking the stage.

I found that classic campaign-style events were thin on the ground, as was time to cover them. However, I did manage to get to a few, like this Aalbers campaign sign hand-out.

Eventually, the full slate of candidates was declared. Here, then-acting City Clerk Doug Rodwell looks at the unofficial list after posting it up at the front door of City Hall.

For the council race, a large event was held for residents to come out and meet candidates one-on-one. Here, two people read down council candidate profiles, mounted in the Wildrose Pavilion at the Lloydminster Exhibition Grounds.

The day of the election, I found time to head out to one of the local polls at the Servus Sports Centre. While I wasn't allowed in to photograph the polling station, the exterior made for a good shot.

Caution tape sealed off the views of the polling station inside.

Once voting had nearly wrapped up, I left the radio station to head down to the Aalber's election gathering. This was being at the Legacy Centre, a community centre conveniently close to City Hall. Even before the results of the vote were known, there were a lot of happy people inside.

Aalbers was feeling fairly happy as well. Here, he gestures while speaking to attendees outside the front doors of the room rented in the Legacy Centre by his campaign.

There was a pause in the night's events after the city's website crashed due to high traffic. Aalbers addressed the crowded room while waiting for the site to get back online.

Once the website was back up, the results were immediately available. They showed a landslide win for Aalbers, and I had to run back from the front door of City Hall to the Legacy Centre. I got back in time to capture moments from the celebration in the room.

At one moment during the celebration, Aalbers's wife Christine made a Facetime call to their daughter, holding the phone while the pair talked in the middle of the crowd. I thought it was a nice moment from the victory celebration.

During his speech, I got a shot of the pair. I didn't end up using this for publication, but I liked the way it turned out.

After leaving the Aalbers event, I went over to the Root, a cafe in downtown Lloydminster where Whiting had set up his election night event. After speaking with him for my election story, I stayed a little while longer to document both sides of the election. This was my last frame of Whiting that night.
